The Lantern Keepers
A light passed from hand to hand
In old Philipsburg, back when the streets were made of crushed coral and the sea came right up to the edge of Front Street, there were no streetlights. When the sun set, the town went dark. Very dark. On nights without a moon, you could barely see your own hand in front of your face.
In those days, children walked home from evening lessons carrying small tin lanterns. Each lantern had just one candle inside, and each child had just one job: do not let it go out. The wind off the harbor was tricky. Sometimes a gust would come out of nowhere and try to snatch the flame. So the children walked slowly, one hand cupped around the little glass window, watching the candle instead of the road.
The elders say those lanterns were more than just light. They were a lesson, quietly given. The candle, they said, was the spirit of the ancestors — small, precious, easy to lose if you didn't pay attention. The child was its keeper. And every night, every child was being trusted with something bigger than themselves.
There was a rule, though, and it was a beautiful rule. If your candle blew out — and sometimes it did — you were not supposed to cry, and you were definitely not supposed to walk home in the dark. You were supposed to walk to the next child on the street, hold up your lantern, and light yours from theirs. Nobody was ever left in the dark. That was how a whole street stayed bright.
That is still how it works, even without the lanterns. Every story you learn from your grandmother, every song you sing at Christmas, every time you help a smaller child tie their shoe or reach a book from a high shelf, every kindness you give without being asked — you are a lantern keeper. You are passing the light. And somewhere down the road, another small keeper is walking with their little flame, waiting for the moment they will need to borrow yours.
